Spring has officially sprung, and we couldn’t be more excited! With the arrival of warmer weather comes our favourite part of spring: the Daffodils. Alexandra Tiffany’s artisans used live flowers to guide our glass selection for floral lampshades.
The daffodil belongs to the Narcissus family, which is well represented in the Tiffany line of lamps. It is also called the trumpet narcissus because of the trumpetlike cup centred among the flower petals.
This lampshade is 20″ wide, 8″ high and has 4″ apertures. Each has a three-row apron. Long daffodil stems droop down, covering, together with their leaves, most of the cone surface, with blossoms appearing mainly in the area of the lower border. The design is repeated five times.
Some yellow-white flowers are widely open, their petals fading from rich yellow-orange into white; others barely break from the bud. The artisans intentionally chose heavily yellow spotted glass for the centre of each daffodil to give the illusion of the flower’s dramatic three-dimensional ‘trumpet.’ A few flowers penetrate the apron and are visible in its mid-row, which is blue-green. Exquisite yellow-white mottling gives the flower petals a realistic look, most artfully portrayed in the large centre cups.
The reedlike leaves, typical of this plant, are blue and green, extensively mottled in light green, blue and yellow to suggest dappled sunlight on the long, straight stems and leaves. The light blue background infuses this shade with a wholly different feeling. One seems to sense the presence of water; through the narrow openings between the leaves, one almost sees the reflection of a nearby stream. The shade is bounded by a dominant blue colour on the aperture rows of rippled glass and an apron whose upper and lower rows are of the same colour and texture.
The four-legged bronze base features an 8″ platform decorated with six large stylised leaves radiating from the base of the shaft and six more, which curve up over its outer circumference. Twelve stalks run up the stem of the base, ending with circular twists at three different levels. The height is 26″, and the finish is dark bronze, like the shade.
